Saltwater Flies for Bonefish, Permit and Tarpon

placencia, Belize

Spent a few days in Placencia for the wedding at Chabil Mar. Chabil is a great resort with a very friendly staff. My wife and I took a day to explore the Flats. Our guide, Benji new the water like the back of his hand. In the morning we fished the Bay and had shots at some Big Permit. They did not eat. They were a little spooky due to the falling tide.

The afternoon was spent island hopping. Really cool way to fish. We would anchor off the island and then wade around it. My wife would look inside and catch bones while I waded deeper looking for cruising Permit. I had some good shots, but they just kept swimming.

The whole day was filled with action and we saw lots of fish and a Manatee. Can't wait to get back down there and spend more time.

The town is very laid back. It has not been overdeveloped yet so it is filled with local businesses. Very good restaurants, beach bars and nice people.

Turneffe Island

Headed down to Belize for a good friend of mine wedding and of course he chose a fishing bachelor party. He decided on Turneffe Island Resort. I was excited because while I have fished Belize I have never been to the outer atolls. We arrived in Belize city and were picked up to spend a few hours at the Marriott while we waited for the boat from the resort. Once the boat arrived it was a pleasant 1.5 hour ride out to the island. Upon arrival the entire staff was lined up to greet us. Pretty nice for some stinky old fisherman. The must have done it for the dive group that rode out with us.

Once settled into our very nice rooms we all met with Greg, head of fishing operations, to talk about what the rest of the week looked like. Very responsive to our request and we worked out a plan.

The fishing was great. The guides worked hard and stayed out until you could not see anymore. Long days, but relaxing as all the boat rides are very short from place to place. I think the longest ride we took was 30 min at the start of one day and then we worked back all day. Lots of wading and lots of Bones.

Permit were around, but not one of there better weeks for seeing them. We had shots everyday and caught some small ones, but the big one alluded us. One in our party we outside the reef and nailed a nice one in deep water. Site casted to it so we counted it as legitimate.

A note about wading: I took my zip up neoprene wading boots. Not tough enough. There is plenty of sharp coral and rocks on the back side of the reef that it demands real boots. Wish I had my Simms Flat sneakers along with me.
