Mousing up a huge Rainbow |

We went back to Charlie’s Alaska Trophy Adventures lodge because we had such a
great time. Charlie and his crew had been very busy since we last visited. A new
main lodge and some new cabins made the place even better than before. He also
added heaters to the cabins which were a much appreciated addition. He has
carved a 1st class lodge out of the wilderness.
Our main target this time was Rainbows. We had a rough couple of days only
catching a few big ones a day, but by the end of the week the fishing had really
turned on. We took the big boat all the way up to Kukukiek lake and waded up one
of the streams that fed into the lake. Bears and Sockeye were all over the
place. A great Alaska adventure. A strange thing happened to me. I was releasing
a fish and went to put my glove back on and it was gone. About 2 hours later I
was fishing way downstream on the way back to the boat and my glove floated by.
I snagged it up and now consider it a lucky charm.
I really got into mousing for the Rainbows on this trip. What a thrill to see a
20 plus inch Rainbow come blasting out of the water after your Mouse. I had one
take 5 swipes at the mouse before he closed the deal. Chris, the guide, and I
had a ball teasing him up.
There were all the Salmon you wanted to catch and if you needed more you could
walk up about 200 yards to a pocket of water that held hundreds of salmon and
you can fish until your arms fall off. I hooked a big King on my 8 wt and spent
a great half hour watch my line zip all over the river before he finally broke
me off. Not supposed to catch them late in the season anyway, but it was not my
fault he took the fly.
This is a great lodge. Fly out lodge type fishing without having to fly out and
pay the extra money |
